Sri Jagannatha Dhama is also known by the name of the Jagannath Temple that was built nearby in the 12th century.

It is an important stop on the Char Dham pilgrimage for Hindus.

The importance of the Jagannath Temple to the economy of Puri is so great that it accounts for nearly 80% of the city's GDP. Twenty-four celebrations, including thirteen major ones, are held every year in the sanctuary complex, all of which contribute to the local economy; Ratha Yatra and its associated celebrations are the most well-attended.

The city is known for a number of distinct arts, including sandwork and applique.

Since ancient times, Puri has been known by several names, including the more private "Sri Kshetra" and the more modern "Badadeula," both of which refer to the Jagannath temple.
