This city was founded in 1648–49CE as the capital of Maharaja Veer Vikrama Dev's kingdom. Up until Balram Dev III's rebellion, it was Kalinga's largest realm.

After being defeated by the East India Company, the realm became a baronial dominion, known as a Zamindari, in 1780, and remained thus until its dissolution in 1947.

Generally speaking, the modern realm was dispersed between the ludicrous North Andhra and South Odisha regions.

Mount Araku and the Eastern Ghats form a horseshoe around Jeypore, with the western side spreading up towards the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh.

The Maharaja obviously saw the significance of this location and chose it accordingly.

This region was ruled by the Satavahanas, Ikshavakus, Nalas, Gangas, and Shilavanshis until it was given the name "Jeypore" by the Suryavanshi kings.

By marrying the lone daughter of a Shilavanshi lord in 1443, the ruler of Northern Kashmir, Vinayak Dev, was able to take control over Nandapur.
